The Importance of Well-Exam Visits

Part of being a caring parent is making sure that your child is well-fed, happy, and healthy. Well-exam visits should be part of your child's care. Our pediatricians at Decatur Pediatric Group with offices in Clarkston, Smyrna, Lithonia, GA offer all the care your child needs, including well visits and sick calls.

What Happens at a Well Visit

Well-exam visits begin at birth for your child, the first one is usually in the hospital. In their first year, they will have a minimum of six visits. The purpose of these visits is to chart your child's progress and to make sure they are reaching the milestones that are expected. At well-exam visits in Clarkston, Smyrna, Lithonia, GA your child will have their height and weight taken. Their lungs and heart will be checked along with their muscular reflexes, vision, and hearing.

Immunizations

Starting from the beginning of its life, your child will be on a schedule of immunizations that your pediatrician will recommend. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) has put out a schedule that provides the information you need to understand which immunization it recommends that your child get. These immunizations continue all the way through to young adulthood.

Well-visits are designed to allow your pediatrician to measure your child's progress. It also allows them to catch anything that is not quite as it should be. Whether it is a developmental delay, symptoms of an illness or condition, or vision or hearing issues, the earlier it is diagnosed the better chance there is for a good outcome.

Parents and Well-Visits

Well-exam visits are also an opportunity for parents to ask questions of their pediatrician. No two children are the same and even if you have more than one, things will never be quite the same. You can ask questions about nutrition, behavior, growth, and anything else that you, as the parent, have noticed. It is important to have a good relationship with your pediatrician so that you feel comfortable having difficult conversations if necessary. Good preventive care is one of the most important things you can do for your child.
