ADHD Testing

Do you think that your child may have attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)? Testing provided by the pediatricians at Decatur Pediatric Group in Lithonia, Smyrna and Clarkston, GA, can help determine if ADHD is responsible for your son or daughter's issues.

ADHD symptoms

Symptoms of ADHD can vary from child to child. Some children may fidget and have trouble sitting still, while others find concentrating difficult. Children who have ADHD may also:

  • Daydream frequently
  • Find it difficult to pay attention if a subject bores them
  • Finish homework then forget to turn it in
  • Interrupt conversations or have trouble taking turns
  • Struggle with organization, planning or impulse control
  • Become easily frustrated
  • Seem unable to follow instructions
  • Lose belongings or forget to do homework or chores

Diagnosing ADHD

ADHD symptoms usually appear before age 7and become much more obvious when a child starts school. If your child has ADHD, a diagnosis will help him or her get the treatment, services and support needed to manage the disorder.

During an ADHD evaluation at the Lithonia, Smyrna or Clarkston, GA, pediatric office, your child's doctor will ask questions about his or her behavior and symptoms at school, home, sports and in social situations. Your child's medical history and medications will also be reviewed. (It's important to rule out health conditions or medication side effects that could be causing the symptoms.)

Your child will also complete a few tests that will help the pediatrician determine if he or she has ADHD. Unlike tests at school, there are no right and wrong answers for ADHD tests. Qb testing may also be part of your child's evaluation.

The test measures your child's ability to pay attention and also records his or her movements. During the QB test, your child wears a special headband and looks at symbols that appear on a computer screen. When a certain symbol appears, your child presses a button. Qb testing can also be used to determine if ADHD treatment is helping your son or daughter.
